Thole and Jenrry

The Mets placed Jenrry Mejia on the disabled list earlier this week, because of a complete MCL tear which will require Tommy John surgery, keeping him out for up to twelve months.  This is bad, for Mejia and the Mets.  It’s a real shame about Jenrry.  He was a good fall back option if someone got injured or wasn’t producing.

Also, the Mets had to place Pedro Beato on the disabled list with elbow tendinitis.  Come on, can they catch a break?  At this rate, the Mets will need to get someone if the injuries persist.  The Mets called up Mike O’Connor.

After watching the last few Mets games, I am becoming increasingly worried about Josh Thole.  For one, he isn’t hitting.  He grounded into a 1-2-3 double play last night which resulted in zero runs and a loss.

But that isn’t the worst.  Josh Thole cannot catch the ball.  He has been dropping pitches left and right, including more than one last night that he should have caught.  Granted, R.A. Dickey was pitching last night.  But Josh was missing pitches he should normally catch and he appears to be lazy behind the plate.  They (the Mets) need to find a solution to this problem…quickly.

Also, for Rangers fans, Im looking to go to the Mets v. Rangers game in June.  Any tips on where to stay or what seats are best for autographs, that would be great.

Problems with the pitching

The Mets were rained out today in Atlanta, and this will result in them playing a double header tomorrow, starting at 4:10pm.  D.J. Carrasco is set to pitch against Derek Lowe in the first game, while Big Pelf is gonna pitch against Jair Jurrjens in the second of the two.

This has disaster written all over it.  Why?  Because the Mets are going to play their second double header in three days.  The bullpen is spent as it is, and with two games tomorrow, they’re destined to have more trouble.  The Mets’ bullpen has been the worst in baseball so far, and their starters haven’t been much better.

It seems as though every time the Mets’ offense get the pitchers a lead, they give it right back in the following half inning, or later on.  The Mets average five runs a game, which has to be good enough to win games.  Frankly, I’m surprised the ‘pen and starters have been so bad.  During the spring, they looked really promising.  I guess they spent all of their out then.  The only positives have been Pedro Beato and Jason Isringhausen.

Isringhausen was called up to the majors a few days ago, making his first Mets appearance since 1999.  And, he has pitched well, though his time here has been brief to say the least.  He has closed close to 300 games, so it appears as though he will be able to withstand pressure packed situations.  The real question is, can he stay healthy?

Pedro Beato has been lights out every time he has come in, and I think, though it may be premature, Terry needs to take advantage of his talent and effectiveness lately.

I think it’s likely the Mets will call up Dillon Gee to pitch, which I’m happy about, considering Chris Young’s rib cage.  They need to call up Pat Misch, to provide bullpen help and to get some outs, something the Mets’ bullpen can’t do as of now.

Opening Day roster

With the season only two weeks away, I began to think about who the Mets will cut and keep.  First, lets start with Oliver Perez.  No.  He shouldn’t be on the team.  Granted, he recently got ONE left handed batter out by making him pop up on the infield, but I don’t have confidence in him and neither should the coaches, front office, or the players.  What has he done to be given a roster spot?

Secondly, Scott Hairston needs to be on this team and will.  Though it is spring training, he has killed the ball.  He’s hit I think five home runs now and has had two seperate games with two.  He can help lead this team and provide consistency from the bench or in the lineup.  It’s good to have such a versitile player on your team.  The Mets have been lacking that for a few years, because he can play infield, outfield, and maybe pitch?

The large question that the Mets have to answer is who will be man-ing second base in Florida on April 1st.  Daniel Murphy, I wouldn’t go with him for the fact that his bat this spring has been below what I expected and his glove, well we know about that already. I think he should be on the team as a bench player because he does have the ability to play third, second, first, and dare I say it left field.  The only problem is that the team has a large number of players that could be on the team off the bench, so that someone who I think should make it will be cut.  Luis Castillo, well I have more simpathy for him now that he is playing better and he hasn’t been any worse than the others trying out.  He is the best defense the Mrets have avalible besides Hu, but his bat limits him in my eyes from ever being a long term starter.  And Castillo’s expirence helps his cause.  Justin Turner, I dont think he’s better than Murphy, Eamus, or Castillo so he is out by default.  I never really thought that he would be given a real chance.  I dont know a lot about Brad Eamus, but the problem with him not getting the job is he is a rule 5 player, so the team will have to offer him back to his previous team befor ethey can send him to the minors.  He hasn’t hit particularly well, either.  I like Luis Hernandez.  He has hit well during spring and his glove is good.  He is my personal favorite and I think he should get a chance, a real chance.

As for pitchers, Jason Isringhausen should make it, providing expirence in the closers role and Pedro Beato should also be there.  I am also rooting for Pat Misch to make the club.

Spring Training Game One

The Mets are going to play their first game of the spring today at Digital Domain Park in Port St. Lucie against the Atlanta Braves.  I’m looking forward to finally see the team play live games.  If you live in the New York, Northeast area, you can likely see the game on WPIX.  Here is the projected starting lineup:

1. Jose Reyes — SS

2. Luis Castillo — 2B

3. David Wright — 3B

4. Angel Pagan — CF

5. Jason Bay — LF

6. Ike Davis — 1B

7. Josh Thole — C

8. Scott Hairston — DH

9. Fernando Martinez — RF

The starter for the Mets today will be Jenrry Mejia with Manny Acosta, Pedro Beato, Taylor Buchholz and others expected to pitch in relief today.

I’m excited to see Pedro Beato pitch considering I haven’t ever seen him pitch and I hear he can bring it on the mound.

Early in the spring

It’s early in spring training so far, but there have been a few things to talk about in spring training.  First, about Luis Castillo.  I don’t think that he has a snowballs chance in hell of making this team.   He got off on the wrong foot with Terry Collins when he didn’t report early.  Although he had a perfectly good reason, he still should have let the team know what was going on, as his brother was having major surgery and he may need to go back to see him.  Secondly, Terry Collins thinks that second base is an offensive position rather than a defensive oriented position.  That could definitely eliminate him.  I don’t think that Daniel Murphy is a great batter by any means, but he can bring more offensively than Luis.

Also, I like that Terry Collins doesn’t appear to care what these players are getting paid.  If they don’t cut it on the field, they won’t be on the team.

I don’t really know much about him, but I hear that the Mets’ rule 5 draft pick Pedro Beato can bring it with the fastball and he is showing great promise and will likely end up in the major league bullpen.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Chris Capuano ends up in the bullpen while Dillon Gee, who I really like, is in the rotation.  The Mets appear as they will be vunurable in bullpen department and could use the left hander.   Also, Ronnie Paulino, who will be the Mets’ backup catcher and is suspended the first nine games of the year, isnt in camp because of issues with his visa.

Johan’s Rehab

Johan’s Rehabilitation schedule

According to Mets GM Sandy Alderson, Johan Santana is expected to be ready to return to the big leagues toward the end of June or possibly sometime in July.  He will be throwing on flat ground until about May.

Also…

According to Jon Heyman, the Mets are far more likely to cut Luis Castillo over Oliver Perez.

I can understand this, but I hate it.  They both need to be gone.  And, Mets 24-year old pitcher Pedro Beato has a good chance of making the club.
