Adam Rubin: Pagan’s rehab

Angel Pagan will begin a rehab assignment on Wednesday night with the St. Lucie Mets at Tampa. Pagan is scheduled to play four games with the Florida State League club before being activated, manager Terry Collins said. Pagan has been on the disabled list since April 22 with a strained left oblique.

Collins said he received a message Tuesday from rehab coordinator Randy Niemann indicating Pagan — who played in a simulated game that day in Port St. Lucie — was progressing.

“It was all good news,” Collins said. “He’s swinging real, real well. He ran great. He has no discomfort at all. So hopefully the recovery is fast. For sure I know we want him to play four days there.”

Pagan appeared close to returning once before, but was shut down after a May 5 game with St. Lucie when oblique discomfort resurfaced.

Today’s game and Beltran’s on the move

Today, Carlos Beltran announced that he will move to right field so that Angel Pagan can play center field.  Beltran has been in Center field his entire career and has only played a handfull of games in right and left.

He said today that he doesn’t want the team to have to wait and he understands that Pagan should play and he deserves it.  He said that he isn’t a selfish player and wants to do what’s right for the entire team.

Beltran although is still not ready to play, and according to many reports he is hobbling and won’t be ready to DH until next week.  This is concerning because he was supposed to be ready at the start of the spring and that will leave a big offensive hole at the start of the season if he cannot start the season healthy.

I think that this is good and shows me a lot about Beltran.  Honestly, I wasn’t the biggest fan of Beltran.  By no means was I Beltran hater, as many Mets fans are, but that 2006 NLCS Game 7 still lingers.  But, after this, I have new respect for him.

The Mets lost their first game of their spring schedule today to the Nationals.  Pelfrey went a couple of strong innings, although giving up a few runs, he was pitching well and threw under 40 pitches.  Bryce Harper had two at bats versus the Mets today and struckout in both.  I will post the box score later today.

Ed Coleman on WFAN

Ed Coleman was on WFAN and the YES Network today with Mike Francesa talking about the Mets from Port St. Lucie.

Coleman expects Terry Collins to decide within the next two weeks who will be starting in center field for the Mets, whether it is Beltran or Pagan.

According to Coleman, Collins will give Daniel Murphy ‘every opportunity’ to win the second base job, although his fielding ability is in question.

Francisco Rodriguez needs to finish, not close, 55 games by the end of the season for his 17 million dollar vesting option to take effect, which Mike Francesa says will definitely not happen.

He expects Johan Santana to be out until at least July.  But he will likely throw in front of the media and will workout with the team.  The Mets are ‘not going to hide him.’

I agree that there is no way that the Mets will let K-Rod’s option vest.  They cannot afford to let that happen and could look to trade him this upcoming season.   Francesa seems to think the Mets should showcase Castillo, to try to get trade offers for him.  That wont happen, I mean, he is washed up and cant play like he used to.

Also, according to Ed Coleman, Terry Collins would likely rather have Pagan in Center if Beltran will need frequent days off, as he would rather have a replacement in the corners.

Put it in the Books!

How ’bout Those Mets!

The New York Mets will be in Philadelphia tomarrow night to take on the second place Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.  And yes, thats right, the Phillies are in SECOND place, behind who? Those Amazin’ Mets!

The Mets finished up a 9-1 homestand Wednesday, only the third time in their history have they accomplished that feat at home.  Tey have won 7 in a row and are 0.5 games ahead of the Phils.

The Mets have been playing amazin’ baseball throughout their last 10 games.  They have had a great, and I mean great ERA for starting pitchers.   ERA: Below 2.00!  Cant believe it.  They are  really showing the critics that they are what we thought they were.  Of course, for the exception of, who else Ollie Perez being the only bad spot.

The Mets’ offense has been clicking.  Jason Bay is out of his slump, spraying the ball around the field for extra base hits and his first NY Met homer.  He has also flashed the leather.  From what I have seen, Bay has speed and a great glove.  I especially enjoyed his diving catch (though I did hold my breath, waiting for him to come up lame).  He has really been a spark.

David Wright struggled in the beginning of the win streak, but has since been lighting it up, drawing walks and hitting the ball really well.  He has sparked the Mets the last 2 days versus the Dodgers.  Angel Pagan also did get off his slump with a 2-run triple.

John Maine showed promise yesterday, K-ing 9 in 6 innings while working through trouble.

The kid Ike Davis has given the Mets a jolt.  He has hit a monster home run and has been spraying the ball which is good to see. He also has a great glove, something Tatis and Jacobs both lacked.

The bullpen has also been great.

Many have said that this is a fluke, but I disagree.  Though its early, they are taking advantage of the others teams mistakes instead of allowing them to get away with it like last year.  This is a sign of a good team.  Just because the Cubbies, Bravos, and Dodgers have been struggling doesnt mean they dont have tough hitters.

Kudos to BIG PELF on his amazing pitching lately.  Who could have seen this coming?

The Mets will be in Philly the next 3 games, starting tomarrow night on WPIX.

Lets Go Mets!!!

Crazy Game

The Mets played a crazy game versus the Phillies today.  Oliver Perez was terrible once again today.  He allowed 6 ER and 2 homers in 0.2 innings.  He excited the game once he fell behind Pedro 3-0.  Figueroa got out of the inning but gave up 2 runs later.  Other members of the bullpen suceeded and others struggled.  Pagan had 2 homers, one of which was an inside the park homer when Victorino forgot the rules in the MLB.  The Mets came within 9-7 with 2 runners on with nobody out in the 9th when Francoeur lined into a triple play.

Mets Fall to Arizona

The Mets lost to the D-Backs last night by a score of 7 to 4.  Pelfrey gave a poor effort while the Mets offense wasn’t stellar.  The Mets’ defense didn’t help the cause.  Especially poor plays by Pagan and Murphy.  Pagan had a bad throw and dove at a ball that was 10 feet in front of him, that led to 2 runs as it went to the wall.  Then, in the 8th, the Mets had a double play, but only if Murphy would have covered the bag.  Murphy was nowhere to be found.  I wonder if Murphy is too agressive and if Pagan has the mental makeup and the health to be a starter.  After the game, Manuel had private meetings with players who gave a “poor effort”.

Mets 4 Reds 0

The Mets defeated the Reds by a score of 4 to 0 tonight at Citi Field.

Johan was good tonight while getting out of trouble in the first thanks to the speed of Pagan and in the seventh.  He threw 114 pitches with 77 of them strikes.  Jeff Francoeur went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI in the first.

The Mets try to win the series tomarrow against the Reds Aaron Harang with Mike Pelfrey on the mound.
