Gee stays, Carrasco goes

The Mets won their fourth straight game today, sweeping the D-Backs and finishing this homestand with six wins and four losses.  The Mets rebounded nicely from a near sweep at the hands of the Astros.

I’ve been impressed by the Mets’ home run totals lately at the stadium.  David Wright hit two home runs today, and Ike Davis along with Bay hit homers yesterday.  Ike had three bombs, and I mean bombs during the homestand.  Ike proved once again he has sheer power and that he is now a force in the N.L. East along with Heyward, Utley, and Ryan Howard.  On MetsBlog.com, the discussion was brought up about the dimsensions of the Mo’s Zone.  It probably wouldn’t be a terrible idea, but I hate changing the stadium once it’s been open.  And, I really don’t know why either.  But, if they did have a shorter fence, Carlos would have had to homers today.

By the way, I love the name Gary Cohen gave the left field wall: The Great Wall of Flushing.

Dillon Gee pitched very well, yet again yesterday.  He did allow four runs, but only two were earned and he was affected by a Daniel Murphy error and an Ike Davis dropped pop up in foul ground.

Sandy Alderson announced that the Mets have optioned D.J. Carrasco to AAA Buffalo in order to retain Gee.  Chris Young is going to return Tuesday to pitch versus the Nats in Washington, D.C.

I will be sick if the Mets put Gee in the bullpen.  There is too much changing of roles in today’s game.  Just leave the guy where he has been effective and where he is comfortable.  Why mess him up by switching him from a starter to a reliever, then back to a starter.  If he can’t be in the rotation, send him to AAA and bring him up when a spot opens back up.

Another option could be to put Chris Capuano in the bullpen, where he has pitched before.  That seems to be more logical, to me atleast.  The only dilemma is that he pitched great last time out.

You Gotta Believe

With the Mets at 4-9, and their pitching struggling, the future doesn’t look very bright.  But, I wouldn’t rule the Mets out just yet.  I’ve had to convince myself that the Mets can do it, but I really do think they can.  Yes, they can, but it won’t be easy.

The Mets have to first figure out a way to get their bullpen in order.  When you lose three of four games to the Rockies by one run, you know that they pitching is at fault, considering the offensive numbers that were put up.  Is it sending someone down that will solve the problem?

The two pitchers that have looked the worst are Bobby Parnell and Taylor Buchholz.  I have been getting somewhat fed up with Bobby, because he just cannot get people out, and he doesn’t deserve to be here.  Pat Misch needs to be here.  He deserved to make the team.

Dillon Gee may be called up to pitch in Chris Young’s place, as he is still suffering from sore ribs as a result of rib tendinitis.  I like Gee, I think he could be successful, as he was last year.

This is the problem that the Mets have to watch out for, keeping the pitching healthy.  I think that it is going to be important to go out an acquire someone, to help keep the Mets in it.  If they could acquire one or two guys, then get Bay back, they could definitely win some ballgames.

Another thing the Mets have got in their favor is that their schedule is not a back breaker.  They play the Braves three times in the next two days, and then have another day off.  This could help out the bullpen’s stamina.  The Braves are also struggling right now, so the Mets should try to take advantage.  On Tuesday, they are back home to play the Astros and D-Backs, then they go to play the Nats.

The Mets have a chance.

Remember Mets fans, You Gotta Believe!

It’s a new team

The Mets put their new, revamped team to the test tonight versus the Phillies in Philadelphia.  The Mets ended up taking it to the Phillies and their fans, running the score to seven to one, and knocking out Cole Hamels in the third inning.

Chris Young was good, really good tonight, completing 5.2 innings and allowing only one run.  He did get into a little trouble with the bases loaded, but besides that I’m impressed.  This is what the Mets wanted, and definitely needed.  Not to mention, Young had three base knocks, tying a Mets record.  He even had two hits in the same inning!  You know your having a good day as a pitcher when you get three hits, and two of the three in one inning.

David Wright was locked in at the plate, collecting four hits with a double and two RBI.  It had been nearly two years since David had four hits in one game.  David’s only at bat without a hit was in the first, striking out with runners on second and third with no one out.  But, heck, I would take this game anyday.  This is a really good sign for Dave and Mets fans.  It is obvious he has worked hard this winter on reducing his strikeouts and being more productive with two strikes.  Although he did K in the first, it was on pitch that had late break outside.

The Mets will face Joe Blanton and the Phillies tomorrow with Mike Pelfrey pitching for the good guys.

Bye the way, Cole Hamels is now 2-9 versus the Mets in his career.  Cole was 0-4 last year against us and he isn’t off to a good start this year.

The rivals

The Mets will be taking on their National League East foes tomorrow at Citizens Bank Park.  Getting the ball for the Mets is going to be Chris Young, while Cole Hamels pitches for the Phils.  Of course, the Mets will get to see the wonderful north east weather for the first time in seven weeks.

It will be interesting to see Chris Young pitch tomorrow.  It’s probably too much to be asking for, but I expect Chris to be good.  I mean, I really like him and think he was a really good, cheap pick up by Sandy Alderson.   Just as long as he can remain healthy, he can be an effective pitcher.  You would think that Chris would be k-ing guys all over the place because of his size, but he really doesn’t strike out many.  The Mets need to solid defensively tomorrow.

The Mets had Cole Hamels’s number last year, as did many teams.  Hamels didn’t pitch well versus anyone in particular, but I expect him to rebound.  The Mets are pretty good versus lefties, especially David Wright.

The weather tomorrow looks as though the rain with halt around 6 p.m, perhaps only delaying the game.  Sunny weather is expected the next few days, which is a plus, but it’s not Florida.

Ollie Perez struggles…again

The Mets played a split squad game in Disney against the Atlanta Braves today.  Chris Young started for the Mets and pitched well, two perfect innings.  Its been good to see the Mets coming back from deficits where last season they couldn’t come back from a one run lead at times.

Oliver Perez pitched two innings in his spring debut, and I’m sure it is no surprise that he fell apart, letting up four runs in two innings.  I’m sick and tired of this act Perez keeps putting on.  He hasn’t done anything to deserve a spot on this team the last two years and he appears to think that it is his God given right that he should be on this team.

Frankly, I’m sick and tired of him.  I guess as a fan it’s more the fact that he hasn’t been a good teammate and has refused to do what is best for the team and his career.  I can’t understand why he won’t do that.  If last year he just went to the minors and showed the team he deserved the spot, he wouldn’t have been in this spot.  He cannot be on this team.  The front office can’t find ways to sell tickets, well they should know that if they were to cut both Perez and Castillo, I’m sure some of those fans would be at the ticket window because fans will see that the Mets are changing for the good.  I don’t see Perez making the rotation and he doesn’t appear to have a good shot at making the team.  If Perez wants to make money in the big leagues again, he needs to get his head on straight and do whats right and work things out in the minors.  If he were to do that, I can speak as a Mets fan that I would like him better than I do now.  The Padres couldn’t fix him, the Pirates couldn’t fix him, and so far Dan Warthen and the Mets haven’t been bale to fix him.

Here is the pitcher’s box score from today’s gamewith my wonderful computer highlighting skills.

Baseball is around the corner…

With baseball right around the corner, I thought that I should update my blog, as I dont post very often in the offseason.  First, I will start off with the Mets signing starting pitcher Chris Young to a one year, incentive based deal worth $1.1 million.  Young does have the opportunity to get up to $4.5 million if all of the incentives have been reached.  Young, who only pitched in four games last season, is 48-34 with an ERA of 3.80 in 135 games started.

I think this is a low risk-high reward deal for the Mets.  The Mets arent expected to go anywhere this year, so if he blows apart, it wont be a major deal.  He is only making slightly over one million.  But, if he is good and stays healthy, he could really help this team.

The Mets also signed Scott Hairston to a one year deal worth reportedly $2 million.  This will be good for the Mets’ bench and second base.  To make room for these new additions, the Mets are reportedly close to releasing  Luis Castillo from the 40-man roster.  Yes!!!  Thats better than any acquisition.

Many sports stations have been making a large deal over the Mets naming Mike Pelfrey as their opening day starter.  I mean, how much harm could it do?  The Mets are giving him the cushion and confidence knowing that going into spring, he will be on the team and play an important role.  And, that may be important for Big Pelf’s mind.

And, one more thing.  My brother and I were debating Pujols.  All I can hope is that the Mets can open roster space to pay for him.  He is a future Hall of Famer all ready and would provide power, stability, professionalism to the team.
